WHAT IS
PHIACS?
It may seem like an odd name . . . perhaps something Greek. While, at first
glance, it may seem a peculiar name, it is nothing Greek nor as peculiar as
the oversight which we are attempting to overcome. PHIACS stands for
"Physically Handicapped Independent Advancement Community Services".
Our primary concern is to assist the community by providing the physically
handicapped with a measure of independence through transportation. We do
this for the physically challenged residents of Toronto, the GTA, and Ontario
(from our Toronto hub).
We are a non-profit organisation which got rolling with our first van in 1977 (after being
incorporated in 1976). Our late founder, Ben Graf, who was confined to a wheelchair at
an early age due to cerebal palsy, knew from first hand experience what it was
like to be aware that the world lay just beyond his front door, BUT he could not
access it . . . because there was no accessible transportation. He sought to
correct this injustice . . . firstly in the public forum . . . and later (out of frustration)
through PHIACS and his own initiative.
PHIACS continues to-day to ensure that Ontario's physically challenged have a
reliable accessible transportation service which with ease and simplicity
overcomes the problem of distance and time.
